Project name: Cookes Peak
Subject: [RESTRICTED] [RESTRICTED] 4,763-acre survey for Abandoned Mine Land (AML) program/EMNRD focused on mining features in the Cookes Range in southwestern NM, near Deming. Twenty-nine sites—from small prehistoric and protohistoric Native American flaked stone scatters to largescale hard-rock mining communities dating to the 19th and 20th centuries—were documented. The three largest sites, Cooks (LA 50096), Hadley (LA 172093), and Jose (LA 50090), represent sub-districts within the Cookes Peak Mining District, which flourished at the turn of the twentieth century.
