Sandal Making and Bola Demonstration with the Tarahumara

August 29, 2019

Representatives of the Rarámuri people (also known as the Tarahumara) of Mexico's Copper Canyons will be up for the Endurance Santa Fe Mountain Ultra Race and want to share their crafts, games, and traditions with us for an afternoon on Thursday, August 29th.

Famed craftsman and teacher Manuel Luna will be demonstrating how the huaraches (traditional running sandals) are made and will have some for sale. Legendary Rarámuri runner Arnulfo Quimare (from the bestselling book, Born to Run) will take us on a trail run and give a bola demonstration (relay team, long distance trail running while kicking a wooden ball). Light snacks will be provided. This is a family friendly event.

Please RSVP with Joe at (505) 577-7477 or Mary at (505) 476-4425.

This event is free and open to the public, but donations are gladly accepted to cover some of the Rarámuri's travel and lodging expenses while here in Santa Fe.

The Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like skylights on the roof.
